And you want to use wlan as an AP for your other devices.If I'm right, you don't need wpa_supplicant or NM because that's all client software.

This chipset is one of many that is laying around and I hope to get out of it more than from others - in AP mode. It works if I disable auth. now the problem is that download speed is limited to around 30Mbps no matter the connection speed. I don't know if I need to do change/add anything else in my hostapd.conf to get it ac mode to work.

Has wlan0 changed name? The firmware of (some?) Intel cards seems to prohibit the use of Band 2 in AP mode, and there is no workaround in driver or kernel code that I know of. I don't think patching hostapd will help. So, if I understand correctly, you have a laptop with a wifi and ethernet card, connected to the router via eth.
